A 50.4 error message on your HP printer indicates a problem with the power supply. This message is more prevalent on new HP LaserJet printers.

If your printer is connected to a power strip, you should disconnect it and plug it directly in to a wall outlet.
According to most printer technicians, laser printers should not be plugged into a power strip because the
power surges that power strips prevent are necessary to keep the fuser warm.

If plugging the printer in to a wall outlet does not remedy your problem, take a minute to make sure all the components in the printer are seated properly.

If you plan to upgrade to a new computer operating system (i.e., Windows 7) and plan on keeping the printer you already have, you are going to need new drivers for your printer.

This is a common HP printer problem and getting more common as manufacturers, like Microsoft and Apple, upgrade the operating systems that are used in computers. You must also keep in mind that a driver does not exist for every version of an operating system. There comes a point where the printer manufacturers just won’t create a new drive. This is usually because of the age of the printer model.

You should always consult your printer manual to find out what drivers are available. If you don’t have your manual, go to the manufacturers web site. If you are buying a new printer, look on the side of the box.

If you are having a problem printing with your HP printer, make sure to check your drivers are installed correctly, and that you have the most recent drivers for your computer’s operating system.

If you discover your HP printer is printing from the wrong paper tray there are two places (on the printer) you should begin your search.

First, look on your PC (the one you are printing from). The printer settings, accessible from your PC, may be set to print from a different paper tray than you think. You should open your printer control application and click on PRINTER PROPERTIES, then find the TRAY SELECTION drop down and select the tray you want.

Second, you should look on the printer. You should make sure the paper sizes in the control panel match the paper that is actually in the paper tray.

If your HP printer is pulling all the paper from the manual feed tray, instead of just one sheet at a time, you’ve got a hard ware problem that will need repair.

There is a pad that is responsible for separating the paper as it is pulled from the feed tray. If pages are not being separated, the pad has worn out and needs to be replaced. The good news on this repair is that you can order and install a new pad yourself (no need to pay a repair person) at a fairly minimal cost.

It is also possible that the paper you are trying to print on is wet (often due to humidity). Make sure you store your paper properly and that you fan it before putting it in to your printer.

A HP printer 79 Error can be the result of a problem with the network print server that services your printer. To remedy a 79 error, open the PRINTER folder from the START MENU on the print server to make sure there are no jobs pending.

A 79 Error an also indicate a failure of a component you have added on to your printer (i.e., MIO card, RAM module). To fix the error, you should remove all add-ons and then add them back one at a time to determine which module is causing the error.

HP printers are generally very reliable but lets face it, they are machines and can still be problematic from time to time. Hopefully you don’t experience a problem at an inopportune time, but if we do we hope the information here can help.

In the coming days we will share 10 common HP printer problems and what you can do about them.

HP PRINTER PROBLEM #10 – Envelope Printing Problems

Envelopes can cause many problems for HP laser printers. To prevent such problems, make sure you choose envelopes that are close to 20-lb paper in weight and thickness. Also, make sure that the adhesive on the envelope is capable of withstanding the heat that the printer fuser puts out to fuse the toner to the page. If the adhesive cannot withstand the heat, the envelope will be sealed while it comes out of the printer. Your envelopes could also come out of the printer wrinkled. THis is because they are to stiff for the paper path. To remedy this, open the back side of the printer and let the envelope come out there (instead of its usual place).

Any time you have a problem with your printer one of the best things you can do it to perform a power reset. This will reset the printer to a ‘ready’ state, meaning a state that you are most likely to be able to print from. This is the #1 trouble shooting suggestion whenever ink cartridge, paper, or printing issues occur. Here is how to do it.

1. Remove all the paper loaded in the main input tray.
2. Make sure that the product is turned off.
3. Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product.
4. Disconnect the power cord from the product and wait 60 seconds.
5. Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
6. Reconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
7. Reconnect the power cord to the product.
8. Press the power button to turn on the product.
9. Reconnect the USB cable to the back of the product.

To print anything of quality you need precise placement of ink on the paper. This is where your inkjet printer and cartridge come in.

HP reports that the naked human eye can notice dot placement errors as little as 4/10,000 of an inch (to make an image on your paper your inkjet printer prints dots). Printing, especially printing pictures is not as easy as just print a buch of dots in a row on the page. The dots on the page are actually not in straight lines. Your inkjet printer and the software that runs it uses complex algorithms (formulas) to evaluate what you are printing and then determines the best distribution of of the dots and the color of each dot. There is a circuit inside the cartridge that receives the algorithm data and then uses microscopic ink nozzles (think of hoses) that fire blasts of ink on to the photo paper. The nozzles can fire up to 36,000 blasts per second.

So now your cartridges are moving back and forth. Signals from the printer software are generating heat pulses at around 1,000 times per second (for each nozzle). The heat creates a vapor bubble that bursts and blasts ink through the nozzle and on to the paper, creating your beautiful images.

You can prevent most print-quality problems by following these guidelines. Check your printer’s user manual for directions.

1. Configure the trays for the correct paper-type setting.
2. Use paper that meets HP specifications.
3. Clean the product as necessary.

Print-quality problems associated with paper
Some print-quality problems arise from using paper that does not meet HP specifications. It could be that:

1. The surface of the paper is too smooth.
2. The moisture content of the paper is uneven, too high, or too low. Use paper from a different source or from an unopened ream.
3, Some areas of the paper reject toner. Use paper from a different source or from an unopened ream.
4. The letterhead you are using is printed on rough paper. Use a smoother, xerographic paper. If this solves your problem, ask the supplier of your letterhead to use paper that meets HP specifications.
5. The paper is excessively rough. Use a smoother, xerographic paper.
6. The paper is too heavy for the paper-type setting that you selected, so the toner is not fusing to the paper.

Print-quality problems associated with paper jams
Make sure that all sheets are cleared from the paper path.

1. If the product recently jammed, print two to three pages to clean the paper path.
2. If the sheets do not pass through the fuser and cause image defects on subsequent documents, print two to three pages to clean the paper path. If the problem persists, print and process a cleaning page.
