Amazon has a deal going on where if you purchase a select Canon digital camera, you can get a free PIXMA iP6210D printer. Right now that printer is selling for $60, so it’s not a bad deal if you are in the market for a new digital camera. When you purchase the camera, you enter the coupon code MKS27AHD at checkout to get the free printer.
One of the best deals for a camera is the Canon PowerShot A540. It’s a 6MP camera that’s currently $170 and it has very good feedback from Amazon customers. It’s also the cheapest camera that’s part of this promotion.

One type of inkjet printer that we haven’t heard too much about is standalone compact photo printers. They started appearing on the market around the same time that at-home photo printing took off, but today they still only make up a relatively small portion of the photo printing market. Even though a lot of people like printing their own photos, so far they haven’t seemed to be totally on board with owning a printer that probably just prints 4 x 6s and nothing else. Companies like Kodak, HP and Canon make an effort to have their customers use their cameras and then hook up those cameras to their compact printers and print with their ink on their paper. Since we haven’t provided too many reviews on any of these kinds of printers so far, we thought we would point out an article in the NY Times that takes a look at five of these printers.

They take a look at the HP Photosmart 475, the Lexmark P450, the Canon Selphy CP170, the Kodak EasyShare 500 and the Epson PictureMate Deluxe. They don’t do any real in depth testing on the machines, but they compare the basic and important stuff like print quality, print speed and general usability. They don’t declare a clear winner, but their top choices are the Kodak and the Epson. Like with most other printers, Lexmark disappoints. They note that the HP has “gadget appeal” but that it is slow and its first print jobs all jammed. The Canon had potential but it had some technical issues.

The Epson and Kodak machines both run about $200, so they right around the same price as some regular photo printers.

Anyone out there own a compact photo printer?

Amazon has the PIXMA MP830 on sale for $233, the lowest price we have seen so far. This is a popular printer, which is why we have written more than once about it. This is a regular sale, so there is no mail-in rebate to mess around with. The MP830 uses a five-color system to print up to 30ppm black and 24ppm color at a resolution of 9600 x 2400. It has an automatic document feeder for two-sided printing and it can receive faxes up to 250 pages long. According to Canon, this machine is designed “with business in mind”, so its features are designed for more than just regular home use.

Amazon also has the Brother MFC-5440CN on sale for $73.49 after discount and mail-in rebate. The MFC-5440CN is an entry level all-in-one printer, so it doesn’t have a ton of fancy features. But, Brother all-in-ones are usually high quality machines, so this machine at this price is definitely a good value.

You can find Canon MP830 cartridges or Brother MFC-5440CN cartridges on their respective pages on our site.

In another sign that digital cameras are taking over, Canon announced that they might stop producing new film cameras. They wouldn’t be completely exiting the business, as they would still produce existing models if they continued to sell, but it looks like there will be no more new models.

This isn’t too surprising, as digital cameras are everywhere these days and traditional film cameras are just not in demand. The idea of developing a roll of film might seem pretty foreign to a lot of people today, especially younger ones. Nikon made a similar announcement recently when they said in the future they would only produce a limited number of higher end models, while Konica-Minolta decided to leave the camera business completely last year to focus on making laser printers and copiers.

Not making film cameras is not too big of a deal for Canon because of the fact that their digital cameras and photo printers can work together. Having a Canon film camera isn’t going to keep generating money for them the way a digital camera will. People with Canon cameras can plug them into Canon printers and use Canon ink to print on Canon paper. At least, that’s what they would like them to do.

Amazon has another good deal on a Canon printer, this time it’s the all-in-one PIXMA MP800. It is currently on sale for $229, down froma list price of $300. That is about $50 cheaper than the lowest price at any major retail store. Once again, because of the amount of this discount, it is likely that Amazon will return to a more sane price in a few days.

You can find Canon MP800 ink cartridges here.

Amazon has the Canon PIXMA iP4200 on sale for $70.89, down from the list price of $129.99. This is just a regular sale, so there is no mail-in rebate or coupon code. It also means that the price could change at any time. Usually with a deal like this, Amazon raises the price back up after a couple of days.

As we mentioned yesterday, the iP4200 is one of the most popular printers on Amazon. The main reason for that is its combination of price and performance. This printer also features double-sided printing, something you really aren’t going to find on other models in this price range. Mostly all the online reviews and customer feedback for the iP4200 have been positive. You can see an example of that here.

If you already own this printer, you can head over to our site for Canon iP4200 cartridges.

Recently PC Mag reviewed the MP830 and they were pretty impressed by it. Based on a few other sites, it seems like a lot of people are impressed with this machine. It is currently ranked 44th on Amazon’s list of their top selling elcetronics. What is impressive about that ranking is that even though it doesn’t seem that high, it is still the highest ranking for any type of printer. The MP830 barely edges out another Canon, the iP4200, a less expensive model which has been out a little longer.

We’ve written about the MP830 before, first when it was introduced and then recently about a couple of deals on it. The most recent deal from a few days ago had it at $239.99 from Amazon, but the price has since gone up to $247.99. That may seem pretty expensive, but this printer was originally listed at $299.99 and it has only been out for a couple of months. The price still might seem high compared with some of the deals you can find on all-in-one printers, since some of them can be found for under $100. But based on the reviews and the various feedback we have seen for the MP830, it definitely seems to be worth the money.

All the reviews/feedback you will read about the MP830 stress the number of features and how good those features are. Canon meant for this to be a business all-in-one, which means that the fax/scanning features are for real. In addition to a 35 page automatic document feeder and standalone faxing capabilities, the MP830 has double-sided printing and scanning. Although these features are meant more for people who use their printer for business purposes, the MP830 also performs well as a photo printer, so it not limited to business use.

Amazon has the Canon MP830 Office All-in-One on sale for $239.99. This is just a regular sale, so there is no mail-in rebate or coupon code. The list price is $300, and this is the lowest price we have seen for this printer so far, so it is a pretty good deal.

The MP830 is rated at 30 pages per minute black and 24ppm color at a resolution of 9600 x 2400. Canon markets this as an all-in-one with business in mind, so it has pretty good features compared with typical multifunctions. It can copy both sides of a document without the user having to turn the page over and it has the ability to receive a fax with 250 incoming pages. At the moment, this is one of the most robust inkjet all-in-one printers. If the MP830 is too fancy for you, then you can try the model it replaced, the MP780.

Buy.com has the PIXMA MP450 on sale for $82.99 after rebate and discount. The list price is usually around $140, so this is a pretty good deal.

This is an all-in-one photo printer that has good scanning and printing resolutions and is rated at 22 pages per minute for black and 17 for color. This machine is a little different than most Canon inkjets because it uses one black and one color cartridge instead of the individual ink tanks that you find in most of their machines. It is not going to make a difference in the actual results that you get, it’s just a question of whether you prefer buying one type of cartridge over the other.

We’re not sure how long the sale will last, but the $30 rebate is good until 6/30.

Amazon has the Canon PIXMA iP4200 on sale for $74.99. A while back we posted a deal on this printer from them that was $99.99, so this current deal is obviously pretty good.

The PIXMA iP4200 is a good bargain and has received favorable reviews from a number of sources. It features a five-color ink system, good printing speeds and two-sided printing – something that is not usually found in such an inexpensive model. You can check out CNET’s review of the PIXMA iP4200 to see what they liked about it.
